Enjoying my 2 baby quail Review by GreenAlex

I bought this because I am interested in starting my own urban homestead and this was a perfect introduction into hatching my own quail. Coturnix quail which is what I was looking for. I've done a lot of research and I know that the hatchability rate is about 50% so I was hoping for at least two chicks Since the kit comes with 4 eggs.
The instructions are very easy to follow. The instructions say to turn eggs twice a day but it's best to turn 3 to 4 times daily making sure to leave pointed end down. I set my ac at home to 77°F and adjusted the air conditioning vents in the room where I placed the eggs until I got to a constant 100°F inside incubator.
It's OK if the temperature goes down when turning the eggs, you have a
maximum of 10 minutes to turn the eggs without it affecting the eggs.
At the 14th day I added water to the second leg for higher humidity, stopped
rotating eggs and waited.
My first chick came out on the 21st day. A bit on the late side. Second chick was trying to get out and couldn't so I had to help after 24 hours of not coming out but piping. Note: once they break the shell they should get out fast like 30 minutes after 24 hours the oxygen makes the membrane inside the egg too hard for the chicks to get out. That's why I gently peeled the shell without
touching the membrane and the chick came out. It had curled toes on one leg from being in egg too long. I did research and made a little shoe from a bandaid to correct curled toes and he/she is walking normal now.
In conclusion. Very happy with the results. Chicks are super cute and tiny. I set up a large brooder box with an infrared bulb. Big enough so they can get out of the heat. Also make sure to feed them non medicated turkey starter or game bird starter preferably 28 to 30% protein. They need more protein than chicken chicks and make sure they drink water as soon as possible.
I did not test for humidity. I relied on the tested design of this small incubator.

do they tell you what kind of quail you are getting and do you have to buy a hatcher as well?

Still Not Certain Review by Cyndi

I have never been able to get the incubator up to the recommended temperature. I am not certain how many days I should have them in the incubator and I am not sure how to gauge the humidity level of the incubator. '
