Don't buy the refribuished welder / poor customer service Review by Tom

After spending a lot of time researching welders for home projects it was clear that Hobart was the one to get. I tryed to save some money buy purchasing the refribuished welder that was suppose to be factory tested and like new condition. When the unit arrived I opened the box only to find problems. 1- the side door won't open. 2- the plastic theads for the knob that holds the wire spool were damaged.3- the electrical plug brass plugs had a plastic coating on them ( looked like previous owner might have had to much current going though the plug and part of the cord melted on it ) 4- fan is making a funny noise kind of like one of the blades is bent.. I decided to send an email to Hobart about the problems before I used it. I didn't recieve a response for several days. When receiving the response they said in the email we are not going to replace the cord just because the blades aren't shinny. Poor customer service. Fixed problems my self, and defiantly done with purchasing anything with the name Hobart on it.

Solid unit, great for most small to medium projects Review by Kenny B

For the last couple of years I've thought about getting a welder to build and repair some things. So I talked with some people I knew and researched online. This unit came highly recommended. I never welded before, but was up and running quickly. I was real pleased with how well it worked. Great unit!

Great machine, great price. Review by Dale

I have two other welders , 1 stick and the a wire feed mig. I have yet to use the Hobart, But according to friends its a good product. My only complaint is when ordering this welder there was no mentioning of free shipping on anything over $ 99.00. Now it is posted on the web site, I just wish it was there when i ordered my welder. But yes I would recommend this site for the purchase of this welder. I received this welder 2 days after ordering it. Great prompt service.

Excellent little machine Review by Jim

I've had linclon-Campbell Hausfield and neither worked or lasted very long. I took my new Hobart 140 out of the box and had it together in no time. I am familar with the functions so it was super simple to put together. The only thing I am going to change is the ground clamp--maybe something heavier. The people at Lafayette Rural King were very heplfuf and polite THANK YOU.

great welder Review by john

ive owned 2 of these flawless machines . My only suggestion to make it better would be to buy a more exspensive hobart ground clamp. But other then that its an amazing machine that prefomrs flawlessly .

Q & A

Questions on Hobart Handler 140 MIG Welder 115 Volt, 140 Amp, #500559

  • From Brad at 2/5/13 3:49 PM
    • Q: Are you able to weld thicker material than a 1/4" using multiple pass, if so how thick?

      Thank you
    • Show Answer
    • A: Hello Brad,
Yes, you can weld thicker than ¼” by making multiple passes. How thick depend on many things, the amount of passes you can effectively make and the skill of the operator. Off the record I would say 3/8” maybe 1/2” max for a knowledgeable welder.
If significant amount of your welds are a ¼” or greater than they should be looking a bigger 230V welder. If the majority of what they do is 1/8” or less with some ¼” and an occasional 3/8” the 140 should be perfect.

    • Q: Would this welder run off a Honda 3000 watt generator
    • Show Answer
    • A: Hello Ron,

I have reached out to Hobart and they confirmed that they have run this model off of a Honda 3000 Watt Generator and while it isn’t reaching the full 140A it welded beautifully on light to medium gauge mild steel. • Q: Will I need to buy another spool gun for welding thicker AL?
    • Show Answer
    • A: Hello,

I have spoken with technical support at Hobart and they confirmed that there is no spool gun that would change the thickness from any more than 1/8" for the MIG 140.
