Bought in Nov, Caught on Fire in Feb Review by Lauren
Quality

Value

We're not sure why, but after using this unit successfully all winter with a 12 ft hose to heat the garage, the unit started on fire yesterday. I haven't run the fan on it since the first use because I saw little value in burning thru the expensive D batteries and it seemed to heat the garage fine w/o them.
The fire alarm first went off while the unit was on, but we couldn't tell it was the heater, as it smelled and smoked like an electrical fire so we were checking all the battery chgrs and other connections in the garage. We shut the heater off as it was warm in the garage and we had to open the doors to air it out. My husband said it couldn't be the heater, because it smelled electrical so we concentrated on finding what had burned. We closed the garage door and I turned on the heater again while we searched.
About 3 - 5 min after starting the heater, it erupted in flames in the area where the hose had connected. This connection really hadn't been touched since it was hooked up in Nov. We only used the far end to connect to various propane tanks. At this point, we don't know if it was the hose that failed, or if the unit itself caused the fire. Since it first had the electrical smoke, we're thinking it's the unit itself.

I'll be contacting the vendor for this when they open tomorrow, but Im very concerned if folks are using this in their homes or in garages/shops while they're not there all the time. I'd be very cautious about this product. Our Little Buddy heater has run for the past 2 yrs without issue, but we're watching it much closer now too.

Great Product...TERRIBLE TECH SUPPORT Review by Peter W

I've purchased both a Big Buddy Heater and a Mr Heater Blue Flame heater in the past year. Both are excellent products, well-designed and well-made. However, when I had a minor issue with one of the heaters, I left FIVE messages on their "Leave Your Number and We'll Call You Back" option, after waiting on hold for over thirty minutes on other attempts. Those calls were made six weeks ago....I'm still waiting for a call back. Great products, but KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED THAT YOU NEVER NEED TECH SUPPORT!!!!

I used it in my deer blind worked great even though my blind is very drafty, no insulation, no windows (just open holes) kept me nice and warm, would be nice if it had a speed adjustment on the fan to turn it up some, fan seems like its on low but still sufficient. used two small propane bottles in 4hrs on med + high heat settings

One really nice unit Review by Robert Ciciulla

I live in the Northeast, and this heater arrived just in time for the big snowstorm on January 3rd. There was about eight inches of snow on the roof (made of glass) of the solarium attached to the back of my house. The PTAC in the room usually does the job, but at the near zero temperatures during the storm, it was struggling. I put the heater in the room, and turned it up "full blast". The two gas cylinders lasted about 3 1/2 hours, got the room up to 80 degrees, and made quick work of the roof snow. The room is 12x12 with a 14 foot ceiling at it's peak. It did a great job!

Cozy Warm Review by Crystal Brown

If you read reviews...you will learn......

This unit works AWESOME...when used correctly. Pay attention.
I hate long wordy reviews so this is to the point.

Don't use the 1lb disposable propane tanks, for many reasons: they don't last long, enviorment, they freeze up (on high), they freeze the internal regulators.
So, you need a 20# tank. Got a gas grill? That is a 20# tank......go get it filled.

Hose: Do NOT get the plain hose and filter...again, many reasons: no pressure regulation creates oil, clogs unit, unsafe....
So, get the hose with regulator...safe, no filter needed, unit wont clog.
Yes, it is an added expense so plan on it. You need the unit, a 20# tank and the hose WITH regulator.
PLUS: hose with regulator has the quick release....nice!

C'mon, you have never hooked up a gas grill to a propane tank without a regulator. This is no different.
Once you have these three correct items...this thing is great!

Fan/blower: kind of crappy. I'm glad it has it and I'm glad I can use batteries in a jam. But you either need the A/C adapter for $20 OR any other fan....Just something to move the heat around. This unit produces a LOT of heat. It rises straight up. The blower moves it around and heats areas more quickly. For $20 and free shipping, I just bought it. I'm not bringing a fan everywhere I use this.

If you follow these simple things you will be very pleased.

Unit is on high, no shut off, no freezing, no problem. Running for 2 hours straight now....on high.
You can use the 1 lb tanks and this can go camping and everywhere else. But if you plan on using at home or someplace constant, you need the 20# tank, or larger, and the Hose WITH regulator.

If nothing else, this unit could keep your pipes from freezing in an outage during winter. HUGE savings there alone. Then use it all over until/if that happens.

For under $200 I bought the Big Buddy, the correct hose with regulator and the A/C adapter. Free shipping and here in 2 days.
You can't get this kind of heat for indoor use from another heater this safely (low o2 sensor and tipover sensor).

Nice portable point source space heater. Review by Warm n cozy

I had a surplus military truck that needed to be picked up in a northern state and was concerned that the trucks heater wouldn't be up to the task. Anyone that's been in the Army knows what I'm talking about.

I used the Big Buddy heater with the optional 12' hose/regulator that allowed running the heater in cab with a 20 lb propane bottle and two sets of "D" cell batteries. Having a safety shut-off for CO and tipping over is a plus.

It was nice to have real heat in the truck instead of lukewarm air that the truck heater put out.

The only negative item was that the factory box wasn't sealed with tape. The box appeared a little beat up, but the foam packaging did it's job. Next time tape the box shut before shipping.

Rural King had the lowest price I could find on the internet. The nice thing about the Mr Heater Big Buddy MH18B is all the safety features it has for indoor use and the ability to use either the 16 oz propane bottles or the larger 20 lb tank. I have not had a chance to use it for it is still summer time here in California, but look forward to warming up the old tent at deer camp and at home this winter. I have called Mr Heater on 2 seperate occassions to ask a question and they are always very nice and helpful. At this point in time I believe one cannot go wrong with any of the Mr Heater Products.

Awesome Little Heater!! Perfect for Emergencies Review by DW

We had one of these during the Ice Storm in February 2011. Lost power for two and a half days. Was perfect to heat about a 200 Sq Ft room kept that room at about 60 on the lowest setting (4000 btu) while the house dropped to the mid-thirties. Could get the room well into the eighties if I turned it up. On the lowest setting the two small tanks lasted about 12 Hrs.
