Wish I had made my own. Review by cSp

Saw this coop on display at my local Rural King. It was just the right size for what I needed, and it seemed sturdy enough. So, I bought it. The description said it would last for years.... Wrong!

It was easy to assemble, but once I got into assembly I realized the wood wasn't as sturdy as I previously thought. The hardware and latches could be a lot better. I ended up replacing the latches with stronger ones.

After a few months of use, the trim on the roof and nest box lid started falling off allowing water to get under the roofing material causing separation. Now the wood in the roof and the bottom of the nest box are rotting out. So much water would enter the coop after a decent rain there would even be standing water in the roost. My neighbor gave me a piece of tin roofing he cut to size to cover the roof to stop the water coming in to get me by 'til spring.

The sliding tray never slid in and out properly from the lack of it squaring up properly during assembly even after some tweaking. It got stuck after a handful of uses and has been jammed in there ever since.

I've now had this coop a year and half and if it was a house, it would be condemn worthy. It has suddenly sped up in the rate it is deteriorating. I feel guilty for having my chicken stay in it any longer. So, now I'm forced hurry and build another before it gets too cold out, because there's no way it will make it through the winter. It didn't even last 2 yrs! Don't waste your money.

Good For Starting Out Only Review by Joyce Rheal

I bought this in March 2014 while on sale. It appears to be light weight pine and IT IS NOT VERY STURDY. After the chicks started to grow we used brackets to sturdy it up. Raccoon can easily open the type of locking system that comes with this coop. I also had to add an additional locking system for all but one door that I could use a Medium bolt snap with. I'll be building a better coop and run and If it holds up through the winter it will be incorporated into the new coop/run.

Good deal for the money Review by David

After reading reviews here and elsewhere, (Rural King isn't the only retailer that sells this kit, so there are other reviews out there), I was a little concerned that it wouldn't be big enough or sturdy enough. I had planned to build my own, but facing a time crunch, I ended up buying this one in a pinch.

I have to say that it's a pretty good deal for the money. After pricing out the materials, I certainly couldn't have built one for less.

As for the quality, I was actually fairly impressed, considering this is something that's partially assembled in China. Everything fit together well, all the pre-drilled holes lined up perfectly, and the wood seemed to be decent quality (smelled like cedar.)

Most of the hardware is a little on the flimsy side, so I will go back and replace some of the hinges and latches that aren't likely to hold up over time, but that's a pretty minor thing.

Assembly was easy and took less than an hour. The instructions are sparse, but it does come somewhat pre-assembled. You just need to look at the diagram closely and make sure that all the panels are facing the right way. The assembly hardware is very clearly labeled and you are supplied with extra bolts and screws, in case you lose one.

I will say that while it is a good size for an urban or backyard set-up, it's probably a little on the small side for four full grown chickens. I think two or three would be more comfortable.

Putting it together was a one woman job. Good quality for the price - not everything is square, but it DID all go together. First Timer's advice about enclosing the bottom and 2x4s to get it off the ground & easier to clean is GREAT. It is small enough to be a chicken tractor though but that would be a two person job to move it around

Delightful, but beware of the Cedar Review by Terry

My purchase started poorly. Box Dimensions on the website are incorrect, Not 31" wide, rather 41." It is too wide for a standard car and I had to drive an extra 1 1/2 hours with another vehicle to pick this item up. However, this coop is well designed, generally practical, good looking and was easy to assemble. The latches could be better. They do not line up right. And it would be nice to have a mesh bottom. More importantly, however, our coop had a very strong cedar scent to it. Although cedar masks odors and deters bugs and bacteria, the oils can be hazardous for small chicks respiratory systems and cause liver problems. We are airing the coop well and have ordered a no VOC non toxic sealer to seal off the cedar before the young chicks go in.

From the begining the latches didnt line up. Had two chickens it After two months the mesh started coming out and after three it started leaning. I tried to take back but you must do so before 60 days. Do yourself a favor and leave this one on the shelf

First time chicken owner. Review by Chicken little

This is a great starter coop. We have two chickens in the coop but couldn't imagine fitting any more in there without them being a little cramped. You do need to make slight modifications for a light to be put in the box.

I had four chickens and they did fine. I didnt have any problems putting it together. The latches could be better. I put rocks around the outside for protection. Never could figure out how to put heat lamp in there.

The coop was good for little chickens and it mite be a good idea to raise it up off the ground about 2 foot.

A few modifications that really made a difference Review by First Timer

We bought this coop and used it as-is for several weeks before realizing we really needed the chickens up off of the ground for the sake of safety and cleanliness. We turned the coop on its side and added a wire mesh "floor." Then we added four 2x4 "legs" in the corners to raise the coop up off the ground several feet. We built a very simple extra ramp to allow the chickens to go from the newly-created second story to the ground. The end result is amazing. Placing food and water on the newly-created wire mesh floor of the coop has made a huge difference in the cleanliness of the feeders and the frequency we have to change everything. The chickens really like being higher up off the ground and often spend time just hanging out "upstairs." With just a few inexpensive modifications, this has really become a nice set up.
