Zebras have night vision which helps them to keep an eye on their predators.
These sleek, striped equids live in the savannah grasslands of eastern and southern Africa where they spend most of the day grazing on grass, leaves, bark, roots, and stems. Each zebra's pattern of stripes is unique. The plains, or common, zebra sport wide stripes on their bodies -- that continue to the undersides -- along with thinner 'shadow' stripes on their hind quarters. Their excellent hearing and vision help them escape predators. They usually live in family groups of one stallion and several mares but often come together in large herds of several hundred zebras. And, once a year, hundreds of thousands of zebras gather to migrate in search of food and water. These herds sometimes mingle with wildebeests, ostrich, and antelope. Zebras tend to be pretty skittish -- who can blame them with all the lions and hyenas around -- and really noisy. Their whinnies, yelps, and barks are their way of communicating with each other. They never wander too far from a source of water and can live about thirty years in the wild.

Faster than most sports cars, the cheetah can reach speeds of almost seventy miles per hour from a dead stop in three seconds.
Active during the day, cheetahs reside in the same areas as the nighttime hunters, lions and leopards. While the cubs live with their mother, adult males live together in small groups. The secret of the cheetah's speed is in its backbone, nostrils, tail and claws. Long and flexible, this bone stretches and contracts like a spring as it sprints across the savannah. Its large nostrils allow for more oxygen intake. Helping steer, its long tail serves as a rudder, and its claws act as cleats. Preying on gazelles and antelope, the mother cheetah has to make a kill every day to feed her young. Used to blend in with tall grasses, the cheetah has black spots on its tan body, but its tail is covered with stripes.

Penguins hunt for fish in the sea, where they can reach astonishing diving depths.
The emperor penguin grows to a height of up to 1.25 m and can weigh as much as 45 kg. They are excellent, fast swimmers. Emperor penguins can reach speeds of up to 30 km/h and dive down to 400 m. On land, penguins waddle or slide on their bellies, propelling themselves along with their feet or flippers. The penguin's favourite dish is fish or squid but they need to look out for orcas to make sure they don't get eaten themselves.

Sea lion pups develop quickly thanks to their mother's milk which is composed of fifty percent fat.
Sea lions have large, bare flippers which they use to help regulate their body temperatures. Dense fur, a mixture of permanent underfur and longer top hairs that are shed annually, covers the rest of their body. Sea lions can dive to depths of six hundred feet, much deeper than other seals, to hunt for fish like herring, anchovy, and squid. They tend to keep to themselves at sea, but their breeding grounds on land get pretty packed. Most head for the breeding ground by May and babies are born in June. Males, or bulls, are polygamous, which means they mate with more than one female. Substantially larger than females, bulls are also pretty forceful; they set up their own territories and aggressively herd females and drive away other bulls. Sea lions have a lifespan of nearly thirty years.
