  1. Schleich Clydesdale Stallion 13670

    Schleich Clydesdale Stallion 13670

    $7.49

Clydesdales can weigh over one ton.

From its namesake in Scotland, the Clydesdale is a breed of draft horses, able to pull loads and often seen today in parades. Used in pulling timber from forests, these horses are currently familiar as mascots of beverage companies. Known for being well-built, Clydesdales generally stand sixteen or seventeen hands high but have been measured at twenty. At birth, foals weigh around two hundred pounds, gaining almost five pounds per day in its first months! To ensure nutrition and health, a mother mare will produce almost sixty pounds of milk per day for her foal. Although sizable, this breed possesses marked grace and docility.

  2. Schleich Giraffe Male Eating 14389

    Schleich Giraffe Male Eating 14389

    $7.49

A giraffe's heart can measure two feet long and weigh twenty-two pounds.

Giraffes are the tallest land mammals-- their babies can reach six feet tall when they're born! Each giraffe has a unique pattern of spots on its coat -- subspecies of Giraffe are, in fact, differentiated by color and pattern variations as well as by geographic range. Some Giraffes are recognized by their rounded or blotched spots -- some with star-like extensions on a light tan background, running down to the hooves. Despite the Giraffe's unusually long neck, it has the same number of vertebrae as humans -- only seven. Giraffes graze far and wide across the southern African bush and savannah, browsing the tops of trees for new shoots. Giraffes can go for two or three days without water, just like camels. They have several knobs, called ossicones, on their heads that are covered with fur. Giraffes sleep for only up to an hour at a time and can survive without sleep for an entire day. They spend most days just ambling around, but when they decide to run, they're fast and can reach up to thirty five miles per hour! Some Giraffes live in herds of up to fifteen, but the social structure constantly changes.

  3. Schleich Red Deer 14647

    Schleich Red Deer 14647

    $7.49

Red deer antlers grow one inch per day.

Living in groups, young deer are cared for and well-protected, especially since they camouflage well in the woods with white spots on their back. Since they must run quickly to escape predators, deer are equipped with long legs. Deer are the only mammals to grow antlers. Males use their antlers to compete with other males during breeding season. Also, during this time, red deer males grow a mane around their neck. This mane is made up of thick fur and makes the red buck look more intimidating. These deer can live between ten and twenty years, depending on whether they live in captivity or in the wild.

Since 1735 in Germany, Hanoverian horses have been successfully bred and developed to the highest standards. King George II of England started breeding horses for work in agriculture and with carriages. As Hanoverians came into their element, other traits were desired. After World War II, sport horses were in vogue. At each bend in the path, records have been kept and incentives given to continue breeding the best. Bred to be trained, this breed is a showstopper with its athleticism and strength.

  9. Schleich Asian Elephant Female 14654

    Schleich Asian Elephant Female 14654

    $7.99

Asian elephants are not as large as their African relatives. In addition, they also have smaller ears.

These elephants never stay more than a few days in one place and have different habitants which are, however, always near thicket forests. Asian elephants live in family groups made up of two to ten elephants. Like with African elephants, the groups are led by an alpha female who makes sure that all members of the herd follow the group's rules. Experts think that elephants, thanks to their large brains, can empathize with other herd members and are able to retain information with ease such as the difference between individuals, memories of a drought or the location of good feeding grounds.
